Serious Side Effects of Jardiance

Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects:

  • Painful, frequent, or burning urination

Jardiance Kidney Failure Risk

SGLT2 inhibitors like Jardiance work in a different way than other diabetes drugs, impacting the normal function of the kidney to increase the amount of sugar excreted in the urine. This was designed to increase glucose production and lower blood glucose levels among diabetics. However, it may be the cause of Jardiance kidney problems.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning doctors and patients that some widely used diabetes drugs may, in some rare cases, cause a flesh-eating bacterial infection of the genitals. The condition, known as Fournier’s gangrene, developed in a dozen patients shortly after they began taking the medicines between March 2013 and May 2018, the FDA said. The seven men and five women were all hospitalized and underwent surgery for the condition. One patient died.

In late August 2018 the FDA warned doctors and patients that cases of Fournier’s gangrene, a rare but serious infection of the genitals and area around the genitals, have been reported with the class of type 2 diabetes medicines called sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. More specifically, this serious rare infection is called necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum.

Oral diabetes medicines included in this SGLT2 inhibitors drug class are Invokana, Farxiga, and Jardiance, as well as Invokamet, Xigduo, Glyxambi, Synjardy, Qtern, Steglatro, Steglujan, and Segluromet.
